Unassigned Traffic / Orders in Google Analytics 4

Problem

In Google Analytics 4 (GA4), traffic or orders may appear as “Unassigned” when the system cannot attribute a session to any of its default channel grouping rules.

This means GA4 was unable to properly classify the source of the session under channels such as Organic Search, Paid Search, Direct, Social, etc.

Causes

Unassigned traffic or orders typically occur due to one or more of the following:

  • Missing, incorrect, or improperly formatted UTM parameters
  • Traffic passing through server-side redirects
  • Sessions involving checkout pages, payment gateways, or iframes
  • Stripped tracking parameters such as gclid (Google Ads) or fbclid (Meta Ads)
  • Attribution blocked by Consent Mode settings
  • Browser privacy features, extensions, or cookie restrictions
  • Session interruptions during Shopify checkout or third-party payment processing

Additionally, GA4 channel classification is algorithm-driven and controlled by Google’s processing logic. Attribution may vary depending on users’ browsers, privacy settings, device configurations, and installed extensions.

Solutions:

To reduce or prevent Unassigned traffic:

  1. Validate UTM Parameters
    • Ensure all campaigns use properly formatted and consistent UTM tagging.
    • Avoid manual tagging errors.
  2. Preserve Tracking Parameters
    • Confirm that redirects, payment gateways, and third-party tools do not strip URL parameters (gclid, fbclid, UTMs).
    • Test full user journeys, including checkout flows.
  3. Review Consent Mode Configuration
    • Verify that consent settings are correctly implemented and not unintentionally blocking attribution signals.
  4. Check Cross-Domain & Checkout Tracking
    • Properly configure cross-domain tracking, especially when using platforms like Shopify.
    • Ensure session continuity between storefront and checkout domains.
  5. Monitor Redirects and Server-Side Setups
    • Review server-side implementations to ensure tracking data is passed correctly.

Important Note

Some level of Unassigned traffic is normal in GA4 due to privacy restrictions, browser limitations, and Google’s attribution modeling. It cannot always be fully eliminated.

Reports show “No Data”

Problem: Reports page shows no data or empty charts.

Solutions:

  1. Check Google account connection:
    • Verify you are logged into Google
    • Re-authenticate if needed
  2. Verify property selection:
    • Ensure correct property is selected
    • Check in Analytics Setup
  3. Wait for data processing:
    • GA4 takes 24-48 hours to process
    • New installations need time to collect data
  4. Check date range:
    • Select a date range when you had traffic
    • Try “Last 30 days” for broader range
  5. Verify tracking is working:
    • Check GA4 Realtime for live data
    • Confirm events are being received

Data does not match Google Analytics

Problem: Numbers in Analyzely differ from GA4 directly.

Possible reasons:

  1. Time zone differences:
    • Check time zones match between app and GA4
  2. Date range differences:
    • Ensure you are comparing the same dates
  3. Sampling:
    • Large datasets may be sampled differently
  4. Processing delays:
    • Recent data may still be processing
  5. Metric definitions:
    • Verify you are comparing the same metrics

PDF download not working

Problem: Cannot download reports as PDF.

Solutions:

  1. Wait for report to load:

    • Try a different browser
    • Update to the latest version
  3. Disable popup blockers:
    • Allow downloads from Shopify admin
  4. Check network connection:
    • Stable connection needed for PDF generation
